Dear Confirmed Credit Union Cherry Blossom Entrant:

You are receiving this message because you are a confirmed entrant in the 2020 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run or 5K Run-Walk. Here are some important announcements as we are six weeks away from race day. In addition, answers to many of your questions are available on the race website, www.cherryblossom.org.

Pre-Race Deadlines

February 29 at 11:59 P.M. is the next significant deadline as we count down the remaining weeks until race day. The following activities will close at this time:

Bib Transfer Process Closes

If you are planning to transfer your bib number, you must have transferred the entry code to the recipient by 11:59 P.M. on Saturday, February 29. No transfer codes can be generated after this time. Individuals receiving the codes will have until 11:59 P.M. on Monday, March 2, to enter the race using the codes. The codes will expire at that time and cannot be re-issued.

For details on the transfer process, or to make a transfer, visit http://www.cherryblossom.org/generalinfo/transfernumbers.php.

Remember that individuals transferring their bibs cannot charge more than the price they paid for the bibs. All additional items purchased by the original registrant (the "transferor") transfer to the transferee. Here are the prices transferors may charge the transferee for any additional items ordered:

  • ASICS performance upgrade shirt: $20.00***

  • Finisher's Medal: $15.00

  • Enhanced Finisher's Medal with place and time engraved: $23.00

  • Packet Mail Out: $65.00

  • Carbon offset: $5.00

*** Note about the ASICS performance upgrade shirts: There will be an opportunity for the transferees receiving performance upgrade shirts to exchange them for the appropriate size at the T-shirt exchange at the Health and Fitness Expo at the National Building Museum on Friday and Saturday. While we cannot guarantee all sizes will be available, it is highly likely the transferee will be able to switch to his or her size.

There are many folks seeking numbers on the bulletin board (http://boards.marathonguide.com/Forums/CherryBlossomTenMile.cfm) so you will have plenty of takers if you are giving up your spot.

Warning: We are monitoring the site (as well as Craig's List and other similar sites) and will revoke the bib numbers of anyone charging a premium and ban them from the race for two years.

Besides authorized transfers, there are no refunds or deferrals - the bib transfer process represents the only way to transfer your number. As always, for safety and security reasons, do not ever give or sell your number to someone else other than as part of the official transfer program. Violators - and the recipients of illegally transferred bibs - will be banned from the race for two years.

Team Registration Closes

Team registration will close at 11:59 P.M. on Saturday, February 29. Add some spirited team competition and earn serious bragging rights among your peers. You can find details at http://www.cherryblossom.org/generalinfo/teamcompete.php or by contacting Team Coordinator George Banker at teams@cherryblossom.org.

Last Chance to Purchase Additional Items

February 29 is the last date to order any of our a la carte items, including the following:

  • ASICS performance upgrade shirt ($20)

  • Medal or an enhanced medal ($15/$23)

  • Carbon offset ($5.00)

  • Packet Mail Out ($65)

These items can be ordered at:

https://secure5.marathonguide.com/register/cherryblossom10mile/purchaseitems.cfm?

After February 29, these items will be available for purchase on the race website after race day only if we have extras.

Last Chance to Switch to the 5K Run-Walk AND Receive a 5K Bib Number

Those changing after this date will receive a 10-Mile bib number which they will use to participate in the 5K Run-Walk.

Prior to 11:59 P.M. on February 29, please send your request to switch from the 10 Mile to the 5K Run-Walk to info@cherryblossom.org. Make sure to include your name and email address exactly as you provided it on your entry form.

After 11:59 P.M. on February 29, you can switch from the 10 Mile to the 5K Run-Walk by visiting http://www.cherryblossom.org/theraces/switch_form.php.

Note that you will be issued a 10 mile bib number and transponder, which can be used in the 5K Run-Walk. If you ordered a 10 mile medal and finish the 5K, you will receive a 5K Run-Walk medal at the end of the race.

Race Weekend

Staging Area Heads West for 2020

Our annual flip-flop with the National Park Service's Washington Monument Grounds turf reconstruction project means our staging area will head west to the 17th St.. side of the Washington Monument Grounds (like 2018). Our March Email Newsletter and Confirmation Email will go into greater detail about the "West Side" staging area and the race line-up. In brief, our pre-and post race staging areas will be on the 17th St. side (west side) of the Washington Monument Grounds, and the race will start on 15th St. (east side as it always does) of the Washington Monument Grounds. We are going to need everyone's patience and cooperation - along with an early departure towards the starting line corrals - as we move 16,000 participants along three narrow routes (two sidewalks on the Washington Monument Grounds and the Constitution Ave. sidewalk). The latest draft of the staging area map appears at http://cherryblossom.org/images/2020/Staging_area(200205).pdf. To view all the Course Maps, click here.

Bag Check Presented by UPS

After last year's difficulties with the UPS Bag check, we had numerous meetings with UPS to ensure a smooth operation this year. Most notably, we have tripled the number of UPS trucks that will service the bag check operation. Each of the 27 trucks which will be located on the southern-most sidewalk extending from 17th St. to the base of the Washington Monument and will be numbered from 00 to 27. Bag check will take place as follows:

  • Bag check for bibs 1-999 will be at truck "00" (double zero)

  • Bag check for bibs 1000 to 9999 will be at the truck that matches the first digit (with a leading "0") of these bib numbers (i.e. bib 1040 goes in truck #01; bib 8123 goes in truck #08, etc.

  • Bag check for bibs 10,000 to 27,000 will be at the truck that matches the first two digits of these bib numbers (i.e. bib 12754 goes in truck #12; bib 23456 goes in truck #23, etc.)

Both 10 mile and 5K participants will use the same set of UPS trucks.

Practice Proper Hydration with Gatorade Endurance Formula

Gatorade Endurance Formula (Lemon-Lime) Is Proud to Be the Official On-course Sports Drink of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run.

As part of a five-electrolyte blend that includes sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and chloride, Gatorade Endurance Formula is a specialized sports drink designed to help maintain hydration during prolonged training and racing when fluid and electrolyte losses can be significant.

It contains nearly twice the sodium (200mg) and more than three times the potassium (90mg) of Gatorade Thirst Quencher to help maintain hydration and proper fluid balance and help replace the critical electrolytes lost in sweat during these occasions. Visit www.gatoradeendurance.com.

Honey Stingers Are Back!

Finishers of both the 10 Mile Run and the 5K Run-Walk will be treated to healthy and tasty Honey Stinger organic, gluten-free waffles along with our traditional Gatorade Endurance Formula, water and bananas.

Important Information About Time Limits

In order to balance the interests of tourists in town for cherry blossom season and the participants in the race, we need to close the 10-mile course promptly at 10:20 A.M. - two hours and 20 minutes net time after the last wave crosses the starting line at 8:00 A.M.

Runners who are not maintaining a 14-minute per mile pace or faster will have to leave the course at the 5-mile mark (located about 1/4 mile from the start-finish line).

Runners who fall behind 14-minute per mile pace during the second half of the race will need to board our sweep bus and be driven to the finish line.

Runners with net times greater than 2 hours and 20 minutes will not be counted as official finishers. This policy is necessary so slower runners will not move up into faster corrals in order to gain time. This is a safety hazard for everyone. If you don't think you will be running faster than 14-minutes per mile pace, you should switch your entry to the 5K Run-Walk. You can do so at http://www.cherryblossom.org/theraces/switch_form.php. Full instructions about switching from the 10 mile to the 5K Run-Walk appear near the top of this email.

Remember: To help ensure that we are able to maintain the 10 Mile run time limits, we will seal off the starting line at 8:00 A.M. and the finish line at 10:20 A.M. No runners will be allowed to start after 8:00 A.M. OR FINISH AFTER 10:20 A.M. NO EXCEPTIONS!

National Cherry Blossom Festival

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile is part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, a 16-day celebration (March 20 - April 12) inspired by the blossoms, which includes events featuring diverse and creative programming promoting traditional and contemporary arts and culture, natural beauty, and community spirit. Plan to take in a National Cherry Blossom Festival event while you are in town. Details at www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org.

These stations will be easy to find, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated. More info about the waste stations will be provided in the weeks to come. Stay tuned for a special announcement in the near future about new sustainability efforts to reduce plastic this year.
