Injury Prevention and Training Programs

OK. The Holiday Season of excesses and excuses is over, and it is time to start to prepare for the 48th running of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run or 5K Run-Walk.

Answers to Injury Prevention Questions and Injury Assessment Clinic by Medstar

MedStarAs you begin to ramp up your training, you may have a little injury of some sort and you may be wondering if you can keep training or need to take some time off. Or you may want to prevent injuries from happening in the first place. You can get answers to injury and injury-in-waiting questions and much more at the Free Injury Assessment Clinic with MedStar Health. Join the medical and training experts at MedStar Health at The St. James in Springfield, VA (6805 Industrial Rd, Springfield, VA 22151) on February 3rd at 6:00 p.m. Sports medicine experts from MedStar Health, including physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers, will be available for Credit Union Cherry Blossom runners and walkers who are injured or hoping to avoid injury. Training Programs

What better way to get inspired than to sign up for one of our training programs? We are pleased to be able to offer training programs for every budget, ability level, and location for entrants in both the 10 mile and (new this year) in the 5K Run-Walk as well. These programs will help you get to the starting line ready for your best effort.

FREE: Beginner 10 mile and 5K Run-Walk participants will want to sign up for Coach Kirt West's Free Beginner's Virtual Training Program presented by ASICS and Enhanced by Garmin - This program is for people new to running or who have not been running much recently. If your anticipated finishing times are over 1:55:00 for 10 miles or over 37:30 for the 5K Run-Walk, you may be best suited for the Beginner's program. Visit for details and to sign up.

FREE: Runcoach Training Programs for Intermediate and Advanced Runners (anticipated finishing times faster than 1:55:00 for 10 miles or faster than 37:30 for the 5K Run-Walk) presented by ASICS and Enhanced by Garmin - This program is for runners who have been running a few times a week and want a training program targeted to their goals and current level of fitness. You exact program will be developed by Runcoach based on details provided to the when you sign-up. Visit for details and to sign up.

$20: Runcoach Gold Program for Intermediate/Advanced Runners presented by ASICS and Enhanced by Garmin - This program provides everything provided in the Runcoach Free program, plus access to world-class coaches for one-on-one feedback. Visit and select the Runcoach Gold Program to sign up.

In-Person Training Program Hosted by PR Training for Runners at All Levels - A program for people in the greater Washington, DC area who want to train with others. Participate in weekend sessions as well as optional training sessions during the week. Visit for details and to sign up. Premium Program: $145.00 which includes a race entry; Standard Program: $105.00 with no race entry (for individuals already accepted through the lottery).

Registration for our Saturday Kids' Run Half Mile Is Open

Deadline - When 500-Participant Limit Is Reached

Our Kids' Run will take place once again on Saturday (April 4) at the National Building Museum, 400 F St., NW, Washington, DC. The site will open with Fun Kids' Activities at 8:00 A.M.; the first heats of the Kids' Run will start at 9:30 A.M. Heats will be run from youngest to oldest and should conclude by 11:00 A.M. The Kids' Run now provides families with a great opportunity to bring their children to the Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday to participate in the Kids' Run, and mom and dad can pick up their bib numbers for Sunday. Young runners (ages 4-10) who are participating in our Half Mile Kids' Run must pre-register. The entry fee is $10. All participants receive a special Kids' Run t-shirt designed by our winning kid artist, and all finishers receive a medal. This event is limited to the first 500 registrants. Parents of kids participating in the Kids' Run do not have to be registered for either the 10 Mile or the 5K Run-Walk. For more information or to register for the Kids' Run, CLICK HERE.

Registration for Team Competition Is Open

Deadline - February 29

Now is the time to register teams for our team competition. This is a great way to rally some spirit within your organization or running club and to garner some serious bragging rights among your peers. There is Team Competition in the following categories: Corporate, Credit Union, Educational Institution (open to students, staff and alumni of the same educational institution), Embassy, Government, Media, Military, Running Club Men, Running Club Women, Running Club Masters (mixed teams), and the Washington Metropolitan Elite Men's and Women's Teams. Ordering Additional Items Process Is Open

Deadline - February 29

If you did not order a medal, an upgrade shirt, a carbon offset, a Runcoach Gold training program or a packet mail-out when you registered for the race, you may still order these items until February 29. No orders for any of these items will be taken after February 29. To order any of these items visit: (Just a reminder that finisher medals are only distributed to individuals who pre-order them and who finish the race. The engraved plate for the pre-ordered enhanced medals will be mailed out in June to everyone who ordered them and finished the race.)

If you know you won't be able to participate, you will be able to go on the website and learn how to transfer your number to another runner starting February 1.   • 48th running of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile, followed by the 5K Run-Walk at 9:00 A.M.

Staging Area Returns to West Side (17th St., NW side) of Washington Monument Grounds; Memorial Bridge Still Closed

The grounds on the eastern side of the Washington Monument (the 15th Street side) are closed for our use this year due to rehabilitation of the lawn. Although the race will be starting on 15th St. as in the past, the staging area will be on the 17th Street side of the Washington Monument Grounds. This is the side closest to the Lincoln Memorial. In order to line up for the start, ten mile participants will head east from the staging area near 17th St. over to 15th St. using the two walkways (which are open) on the Washington Monument Grounds, and the sidewalk along Constitution Ave. Participants will be directed to the appropriate walkway or sidewalk based on each participant's starting corral. The 5K Run-Walk will start and finish just east of the intersection of 17th and Independence Ave., SW so participants will be able to access the start/finish directly from the staging area. More details (with detailed maps) will be forthcoming about this process as race day gets closer. We will need a bit of extra patience on everyone's part to adapt to what is our "more challenging" staging area.

National Cherry Blossom Festival

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile is part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, a 16-day celebration (March 20 - April 12) inspired by the blossoms, which includes events featuring diverse and creative programming promoting traditional and contemporary arts and culture, natural beauty, and community spirit. Sustainability News

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom has received Gold Inspire Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport for our work to conduct a sustainable event and support other events as they strive to be green. As part of our ongoing communication, we are excited to introduce "Sustainability Sunday" this year. No Metro Service to Race Site on Race Morning; Return Service Available

Unfortunately, WMATA has priced us out of the market and only allows organizations to purchase early openings of Metro on Sundays starting at 6:00 A.M. (instead of 5:00 A.M. as in the past). This means Metro will not be open prior to the race (please voice your displeasure directly to WMATA). Metro opens at 8:00 A.M. on Sunday morning, so it will be available for return trips after the race. Most participants have perfected their non-Metro transportation alternatives by now. We know that many people are using Uber or Lyft to get to the race site. Once again, we will have an expanded Bike Valet parking area, and details about various parking services will be coming soon. Note: If you downloaded the app last year and still have it on your phone or iPad, you shouldn't have to do anything other than open it on your phone, and it should update to the current version. However, if for some reason you still see the 2019 version, you may have to then go through the download procedure again.

We Need Your Help for Our T-Shirt Quilt!

To celebrate our history, we are assembling a t-shirt quilt with shirts from all of the past years of Cherry Blossom - and we need your help! CUCB is on the hunt for vintage Cherry Blossom Race T-Shirts to complete our quilt - we are missing a few years of shirts and hope you might have one or two in your closets!

In appreciation of your help and for giving up your vintage shirt, we will award you with a paid CUCB 2020 or 2021 race entry (your choice), including an upgraded race shirt and enhanced medal.

Missing years are:

Perrier years '78, '80, '81, '82, and '83
Nike Years '84, '85, '86, and '90
Credit Union Years '02 and '08

If you have one of the missing years above, send a photo of the shirt to  - if you are the first one with that year, you'll be sent instructions on where to mail the shirt. Once the shirt is received, you will be sent a paid entry code for the 2020 or 2021 race!

Once assembled, the quilt will be displayed at race events including the Health and Fitness Expo. Be on the lookout at the #CUCB2020 Expo!
