Saturday, April 1, 2023
Time: 9:15 A.M.
For everyone’s safety, running with a dog or headphones is NOT permitted.
Please Note: The 5K Run-Walk will now be held on Saturday, April 1 (the day before the Ten Mile Run) and will stage on Freedom Plaza and traverse the route of Presidential Inaugurations down Pennsylvania Avenue before crossing the National Mall in the shadow of the Capitol Building and returning by the same route. A course map will be posted here as soon as it becomes available.
All 5K entrants receive the official 5K race t-shirt, their overall times and places in the event, and post-race food and drink. All runners will be scored on net times. Awards will be given to the top 5 overall men and women, as well as 3 deep in almost all age groups. Click Here and scroll to the bottom to see the full listing of all 5K awards. All 5K runners must finish and be off the course no later than 10:30 A.M.
Registration for the In-Person 5K Run-Walk on April 1 will be open – there will not be a Lottery for the 5K – unless you want to run both the 10 Mile AND the 5K. If that is the case, you will enter via the 10 Mile Lottery. For details on the 10 Mile Lottery, Click Here.
Registration for those wishing to enter the 5K only will open on December 20, and will remain open until February 28, 2023, or until the registration limit of 5,000 participants is reached, whichever comes first. Anyone wanting to participate in the 5K should check back here on or after December 20 to sign up.
Switching to the 5K from the 10 Mile
We understand that sometimes injury or time pressures can sideline your training for a 10 Mile race. If your training doesn’t go as planned, you will be able to change from the 10 Mile race to the 5K race, as long as the entry limit of 5,000 registrants for the 5K has not been reached. The cutoff date for any race switches is Sunday, March 26; there will be a $10 fee for race switches after February 28.
After the 10 Mile Lottery is over, if you have been accepted into the 10 Mile but want to switch to the 5K, we will post a form here for you to use to change your registration.
If we have not reached the 5,000 runner entry limit for the 5K and you fill out the form by February 28, there will be no fee for the change. Your registration information and name will be pre-printed on your 5K bib number, which you can pick up at the Expo on Friday, March 31 from 3:00 P.M. – 7:45 P.M., or at the race site on Saturday April 1 starting at 7:00 A.M. You will receive a 5K t-shirt, and if you purchased a 10 Mile medal, you will get a 5K medal when you finish the race.
If we have not reached the 5,000 runner entry limit for the 5K and you fill out the form after February 28, there will be a $10 switch fee. Your registration information will appear on your 5K bib, but your name will not. You can pick up your 5K bib number at the Expo on Friday, March 31 from 3:00 P.M. – 7:45 P.M., or at the race site on Saturday April 1 starting at 7:00 A.M. You will receive a 5K t-shirt at packet pickup as long as we still have one in your size. If you purchased a medal when you registered for the 10 Mile, you will receive a 5K medal as long as we still have medals in stock.
No race switches will be allowed after Sunday March 26! You must wear a 5K bib to be allowed to run in the 5K. Anyone who runs the 5K race with a 10 Mile bib will be disqualified from both races.
The 5K will have a brand new course starting and finishing in Freedom Plaza this year. Click Here for the 5K course map.
Participant short-sleeved T-shirts (cotton or 50-50) are given to all 5K entrants. At registration, participants are given the option of purchasing a short-sleeved Performance upgrade shirt from ASICS in place of the non-technical short sleeved shirt. For more on t-shirts, Click Here.
Post-race refreshments following the race will be available in the 5K staging area.
